Given that the Witwatersrand gold deposits outcrop over a very wide area either side of Johannesburg the goldfield is commonly divided into three districts; namely Central, Eastern and Western. To view a schematic overview of each of these zones click the appropriate map link from the list below.

Like those from Kimberley postcard issues relating to this famous mining region were extremely prolific from the Edwardian period onwards. The vast extent of this goldfield and its longevity has given rise to a great number of different mining ventures and mine sites. Many of the earliest mines were only short lived ventures. Others stood the test of time through a series of technological improvements, expansion programs plus buy-outs and mergers with neighbouring mining operations.
